“It is the steel which has captured my attention during the past 18 years. It is soft and structural, delightfully organic and industrial. In the abstract forms, I am fascinated by its malleability; and the smooth and glossy finish refuses to betray the nature of the material, its underlying strength.”
“The pieces in this series are of table-top size, ranging from six-to-15 inches high, and four-to-seven inches in diameter. By weight, hey are a bit incongruous - I say this because people have often shown surprise upon picking up a piece. I presume that is because they imagined them to be made of ceramic, or plastic, or something else other than steel. They range in weight from 1.2-to-6 lbs.
“I have been pleasantly surprised by the extreme curiosity that the pieces elicit. I think their surface finishing and their grated colorful accents draw the viewer to try desperately to figure out their intended function.”
Tanya Wood, a Montreal Artist, has been creating welded-steel sculpture since 2009.
