TAG Art Gallery is exhibiting new works by Brita Housez, for which she is using ‘poured-art’ techniques and finishing some pieces with a high-gloss resin. Below is Brita’s commentary on taking a new and exciting artistic direction.
“I have been experimenting with fluid paints and loving it. Ideally, they should have the consistency of liquid honey which allows them to flow and spread easily when poured on the canvas. I sometimes add a few drops of silicone to create 'cells' which add design, texture, and bursts of colour to a piece. I love the spontaneity of fluid art which seems to have a mind of its own as it flows across the canvas.
“When dry, I try to enhance it with a paintbrush to make the piece my own. Instead of finishing these abstract paintings with varnish, I sometimes like to apply a couple of coats of resin to give a shiny, glass-like finish which, I think, looks amazing.”
Through more than 20 years of pursuits in painting and design, Brita Housez's style has evolved from realistic nature scenes to unique impressionistic and abstract designs, with depth of colour and a a richly-textured look.
Brita was born in Germany and grew up in France and Montreal. After graduation from Acadia University, Brita moved to Grenoble, France, to pursue graduate studies, and ultimately resided there for several years. Upon returning to Canada she worked as a communications consultant for a public relations firm; and raised her two daughters. She has lived in St. Catharines for over 20 years.
Along with her art, Brita has had a long-time interest in food and nutrition, and has published three cookbooks.
