Capt. James Graham

Capt. James Graham was a junior officer in the 70th (Surrey) Regiment of Foot.  His striking view of The Falls was published a short time after the Regiment returned to England in the spring of 1843 from a two-year posting to Montreal in Lower Canada.  At the time, with the unrest from the 1837 Rebellions largely over, Graham and his fellow officers would have been eager to take the opportunity to travel to Upper Canada and view the wonder of Niagara Falls.  Below is a reproduction of a page from the 1848 catalogue of the publishers, Smith, Elder & Co., where this “beautifully coloured” engraving is advertised for sale for “21 shillings”:
