Nicholas Hornyansky (1896-1965)
Born in Budapest, Hungary, he was working as a colour mixer in the printing office of his father by the time he was 12. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, Budapest, and continued his studies in Vienna, Munich, Antwerp & Paris. An accomplished portrait painter, about 1919 he returned to Belgium to do landscape paintings at the School of (Franz) Hens, as well as establishing himself in the field of etching. He left Belgium after nine years for Paris to focus on learning aquatint printmaking and for more etching studies.

After a time back in Brussels, he came to Toronto in 1929, attracting the attention of artists & critics with exhibits at the Royal Canadian Academy and the annual shows of the Ontario Society of Artists. He became a leading member of the Society of Canadian Painters (Etchers & Engravers), managing touring exhibitions as early as 1939.

His aquatints were described as unusually fine & colourful and filled with warmth & humanity.  (Ref. - Dict. of Cdn Artists)
