This Remembrance Day, November 11th, 2018, marks the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice which took effect “at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I. St. Catharines artist Francie McGlynn drew on her childhood experiences of growing up in Niagara to create this evocative and timeless view of solemn Merrittonians gathering at the town Cenotaph on Remembrance Day.
Francie’s pastel work captures perfectly a local community’s feelings of loss and mourning for its Veterans, and also the sense of reverence and respect with which Canadians celebrate all who have served and sacrificed. Thank you, Francie, for this most fitting tribute.
