Artist Statement/Biography

Danny Custodio is a contemporary photo-based artist, based in St. Catharines in recentyears, who works with concepts around the working class, culture and the relationship between the human and natural world. He has created a number of series of works, including ‘Azulejos’ (a tribute to his ancestry and the Portuguese immigrant experience; and ‘Trees’ (depicting scenes from the streets of St. Catharines).

Danny was born in Toronto. He studied photography at the Ontario College of Art and Design. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada and the United States and is held in many private and public collections. And it was the subject of a photo essay in Maclean’s Magazine.

Azulejos are a traditional form of Portuguese ceramic tile work. They are a common aspect of the Portuguese culture that dates back to the 18th century. These mosaics, both small and grand in scale, typically depict religious scenes or folk legends. These tile murals can still be seen today mounted right on the facades of homes in the Portuguese community.
